Also make plans to attend the SCA's Known World Academy of the Rapier on Friday thru Sunday, October 8-10 click here. If you attend any ECWSA event in Texas this year, this is the one to make - a great event for beginning reactors and especially interested public to participate! For more details contact the Steward (see above). Hands on demonstration of skills and lifestyle of the period soldier. Activities include: Barber Surgeon – Thom Ralston will present his famous class on the tools and techniques of period battlefield medicine. This presentation is informative, entertaining, amusing and, at times, a bit macabre in it's period detail. A great class for those interested in period soldiering. Blacksmithing – John Crouchet, professional blacksmith and proprietor of Sycamore Creek Forge, invites you to his demonstration of period blacksmithing techniques. John will discuss and contrast blacksmithing in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Pike – Learn the use of the pike for period warfare. We will provide the pikes and expert instruction. According to attendance and time we may also run some tactical scenarios where you can demonstrate your skill with pike, sword and musket so bring fencing gear if you have it. Muskets – Learn to load, fire and clean period muskets and calivers. We will provide the equipment and expert instruction. You are also invited to bring your own black powder weapons to load and fire at our range. Cannon – Noted Artilleryman Allen Hutton returns to Sycamore Creek Ranch with his beermug breachloader cannon for a thundering demonstration of the destructive power of a period field piece. See the effects of roundshot and cannister as Allen destroys his targets. Lunches – Order a box lunch to be delivered to you on site the day of the Academy. This is a good thing since the closest food available is nearly 10 miles away, back in town. Order here. This event will prelude the opening of the The Known World Academy of the Rapier, the SCA's foremost symposium for rapier instruction to be held in Austin, Texas. Join them Friday Saturday and Sunday for fencing classes including a melee workshop for group action instruction and witness as several participants play their prize.
